Jimmy Ortega is a skilled drum maker of Jicarilla Apache & Hispanic descent.

Jimmy makes drums in a traditional method, using hollowed log frames with walls thinned down. The trees, native to Northern New Mexico (cottonwood, aspen or pine), are harvested in a sustainable way, each spring, and the logs are stripped of bark, hollowed out, cut into sections, then stored so they dry slowly to prevent cracking.
Participants work to finish the hollowing of the drums and then to sand the outside for a beautiful natural appearance. After soaking the rawhide to make it pliable, then the hide is hand-scalloped, stretched and secured with rawhide lacing to the frame. On the last evening, beaters are made and the drums are blessed and initiated with a small ceremony.
Workshop Drum sizes are 10in x 10in, 12in x12in ($200usd extra), 15in x 15in ($350usd extra).
