When you leave Albuquerque follow the signs to the highway, 1-25 North to Santa fe.
On the highway, after about 50 minutes when you are close to Santa Fe, look for the signs for State road 599, Exit 276b, the Santa Fe bypass road. Take this exit
Follow the signs on that road for Taos and Española.
(If you miss 276b it don't worry, simply take the exit for St. Francis drive and follow that through town out onto Hwy 84/265.)
Take Highway 84/285 north to Española.
In Española, follow the signs for HWY 68, north to Taos.
Important: the road goes straight through town. You do NOT need to make any turns. Just drive straight through Española.
Española to River Spirit
we are about 16 mile north of Española. When you enter the river valley after Velarde, where the highway becomes single lane, keep an eye out for Embudo Station. Use it as a marker for distance. We almost one mile north of the entrance for Embudo Station. Our physical address is 1858, highway 68, Embudo.
The south entrance to our property is 0.9 miles north of the entrance for Embudo Station Restaurant, or at 18.5 miles, (ie the mile marker before us is Mile Marker 18 & our driveway is 0.5 miles after that.), on the left hand side ie the river side. If you miss our drive the first time, just continue north for a short time and you will find places to pull over and turn around again.
This can be a busy road. try and pull off the road to let cars pass... we usually do at Sugars burger stand (0.6 miles from the house) and you should try and do so somewhere along that stretch of road... then you can pull more safely into our driveway.
we are a 0.6 miles north of the burger stand, on the left hand side of the road. ie you will have to cross the road to enter our driveway. You will see a brown trailer on the left. We are the next residence to the brown trailer, the one with the unstuccoed strawbale wall.
Coming from the North (Taos) to River Spirit:
We live at 1858, highway 68, Embudo. The house is 2 miles south of intersection 75, for Dixon, on the right hand side ie the River side.
Our immediate neighbors are the Stone House (Rock House Guides) to the north and the brown trailer to the south. Our property is the unstuccoed grey wall inbetween these two properties.
The road gets very twisty shortly after the passing Embudo Post office and traffic can be slow. Watch for the sign for Black Mesa winery on the right (0.2 miles north of the house) as it marks the beginning of our neighbors' land. You should shortly afterwards see their stone house and then our unstuccoed strawbale wall. We share one drive at the north end of our wall with them and there is a second entrance at the south end of the wall. Be careful entering!
You need to make a sharp turn left onto the drive from the North entrance.
You'll know you are in the right place when you see the geodesic domes ahead of you. If you reach Embudo Station, you have gone 1 mile too far south!
This is a busy highway, full of impatient drivers so begin to signal & slow down early. Pull off the road if you need to let traffic pass. If you miss the entrance, just drive south and pull over just below the brown trailer, turn around and enter the south entrance.
Take Hwy 68 south for approx 14 miles.
Take the right at San Juan/Okhay Owingeh onto NM-74 . This is the turn near the large white water tower.
Continue on NM-74 until it meets 56A. At this point, NM-74 veers left and NM-56A is straight ahead. Take NM-56A, straight ahead. It is a narrow road and twisty, so be careful.
Where it intersects with HWY-285, after about 2 miles, turn right (north) towards Ojo Caliente.
Pass Ojo in about 15 miles. Go ALLLLL the way through Ojo Caliente, continuing about 2 miles North until you see State Road 111, marked on your left - turn LEFT on 111. (it is the first left out of Ojo Caliente, on a hill, with signs for Mesa Vista high school, El Rito and of course, the local landmark, the large "PIGS" sign).
You can clock the distance from there. it's 5.2 miles to felipe's house. Felipe's house is on your left, just past a pink house. There's a sign out front that says Owl Peak Pottery, and the phone number there is 505- 583-2345.
Drive down to Highway 68, about 16 miles to Espanola.
In Espanola, take a right turn at The Bank of America traffic lights onto Fairview. (The 4th set of traffic lights you meet)
Cross the Rio Grande, and continue straight, up hill to the next set of lights. Turn RIGHT at these lights, rejoining HWY 84/285 towards Abiquiu. This is a 4 lane highway. Drive for 5.6 miles to where the 4 lane highway ends (narrows to a 2 lane). There is a Chevron gas station on your right and take the RIGHT turn there, onto HWY 285, to Ojo Caliente.
From that turn, continue for 17.9 miles until you reach the intersection with State Road 111. You will pass through Ojo Caliente in about 16 miles.
Felipe's house is exactly 5.2 miles from that intersection, just after the pink house in La Madera. The sign on the light pole outside the house reads "Owl Peak Pottery & Studio". Turn LEFT into the driveway.
Turn right out of Felipe's house. Clock the distance from there: 5.2 miles to HWY 285.
Turn right towards Ojo Caliente. Go about 16 miles to the junction with NM-56A.ß
Take a left turn onto NM-56A - and drive 2 miles to the stop sign.
When the road from the right is clear, drive straight ahead onto HWY 74.
Drive through the Pueblo, all the way until you reach the intersection with HWY68.
Turn left, crossing the highway and drive 16 miles to River Spirit.
If you miss the turn onto NM-56A, then follow the directions below through Espanola.
Turn right out of Felipe's house. Clock the distance from there: 5.2 miles to HWY 285.
Turn right towards Ojo Caliente. Go about 18 miles to the junction with hwy 84.
At the junction of 84 & 285, take a left turn onto 84 - towards Espanola, which is about 10 miles away.
At the first traffic lights, turn left onto Fairview drive, following the signs for HWY 68.
At the next traffic lights, turn left again onto HWY 64, going north towards Taos.
